The Avengers
Nifty picture, eh? I chose it to underscore the issue of special effects. The Avengers is all about the amazing technology of computer graphics.
We took in the 3-D version of the flick. Wow! See those folks above? They are all super-heroes, and super they are! With the extraordinary use of computers, the heroes can do it all: fly in space, destroy buildings, wield lightning, and fight for truth and justice The American Way!
It's all very tongue-in-cheek. Just check out the banter between the heroes as they battle the villains. Remember James Bond's occasional wisecracks? These characters offer a quip-a-minute!
There are two standouts among the cast: Robert Downey Jr is great as Ironman, a role he reprises repeatedly with great success. He is obnoxious, egotistical, yet affable as the the billionaire businessman who dons metallic clothes. Scarlett Johannson, ever pretty, is fun as the slinky orange-haired fighter who fears no evil!
The enemies? Think of gigantic machines that look like the oversized snake in Anaconda....machines that have horrid teeth and fly with the ease of butterflies! Behind the machines is a terribly infamous, devilish bad guy who seems to have no limits to the depths of his nastiness!
The film is very low-brow. Little redeeming value. Shallow plotline. But what an enjoyable way to spend two hours!

I will see R. Downey Jr. in anything. I will see Mark Ruffalo in anything. I am a big fan of Jeremy Renner's work. I was in. I had a good time. It's not my usual genre, but I knew in advance it used humor, which I find essential. I liked the juxtapositioning of ancient and modern (futuristic) heroes/legends. Thor. Cool. Loved the Captain America character. Hulk was the best ever! Scarlett's character left me "meh." I kept waiting to discover her secret and unique skill. Seemed to be just damn good fighting. Well, they all had that, but each also had something unique. What was hers? Also, she stayed way to make-up-intact and not-a-hair-out-of-place for all she went through. But she was the ultimate femme heroine in the end with the sceptre.
ReplyDeleteI also appreciate a larger-than-life movie that still comes down to small stories of relationships; this one had several, not the least of which pitted the two "gods" against each other, trying to resolve sibling rivalry.
I had wanted to see it in 3-D. Might still have to do that.
Happy Summer Viewing!!
Dang. A couple typos in my comment. I can edit a post but not a comment. Lo siento.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments, Valerie. Yes indeed, Ruffalo and Downing Jr are tops. I agree on Scarlett...she was the weakest of the characters. What impressed me most was the amazing computer animation. Wow! This genre has come soooo far! I enjoyed the flick for what it was: basic good v evil in a cartoonish, futuristic, make-believe setting. Go see it in 3-D! That's how we saw it...and by the way, I took my 90 year old mama and she loved it too!
