A Most Wanted Man

A John le Carre novel will pull me into a cool air-conditioned theatre any day, but then again it's not a tough sell in this August heat. Ooh, he writes such provocative stories with non-superhero characters. Refreshing this summer.

The tag: A Chechen Muslim illegally immigrates to Hamburg, where he gets caught in the international war on terror.

But our protagonist is one Gunther Bachmann, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in his final role. Supporting cast included Rachel McAdams and Robin Wright. Great performances all. But for me, Willem Dafoe and Grigoriy Dobrygin steal every scene they're in.

In my commitment to short posts, until someone out there has seen it to discuss, I'll simply say that this is a unique spy movie in that it does not rely on car chases through Paris (sorry Matt Damon) or shoot-em-ups. It relies on the brain, as does REAL spy work all over the world, performed by unsung heroes.

A Most Wanted Man is a bit slow in parts, and left a couple of gaps in some character development, but it was an excellent movie that I would watch again. Hope you see it.

  1. Sorry for the funky thing the text is doing here, folks. Don't know how to fix it.

  2. Le Carre was in a class of his own. Yes indeed, no crazy car chases or James Bond action. Just the quiet dirty stuff that real spies do. I loved "Spy who came in from the cold". It's still a classic. I'll get out and see this one too. Thanks, Valerie.
