Boyhood

Ya know those corny oval frames with 12 round openings, one for every grade's school picture? Well, that's kinda this in film form. But it's anything but corny. If you complain that "no one does anything different in film these days," you owe it to yourself to see director Richard Linklater's oldest-yet-newest endeavor, Boyhood. I have a feeling this film will hover in my mind for some time.
IMDB's synopsis: "The life of a young man, Mason, from age 5 to 18." Yep, that's all folks. Except that it was 12 years in the making, using all the same actors, so we witness the very real aging of Ethan Hawke, Susanna Arquette, and the maturation of Ellar Coltrane and Lorelei Linklater (Richard's daughter). Now THAT is something new to film.

Dialogue and performances are flawless - so natural, you'll start swearing you're watching a reality show. This film is so real! Characters are flawed, yet totally redeeming. You may be disappointed if you're expecting plot twists and high intensity.  But look closely. You are being handed LIFE on a platter, and much like the genius of Thornton Wilder's Our Town (which I could never appreciate until I was over 40), the message is there if you look hard enough.

If any of you readers out there go to see it, weigh in a comment; we'll discuss more.

Thank you, Robin Williams.

A Most Wanted Man

A John le Carre novel will pull me into a cool air-conditioned theatre any day, but then again it's not a tough sell in this August heat. Ooh, he writes such provocative stories with non-superhero characters. Refreshing this summer.

The tag: A Chechen Muslim illegally immigrates to Hamburg, where he gets caught in the international war on terror.

But our protagonist is one Gunther Bachmann, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in his final role. Supporting cast included Rachel McAdams and Robin Wright. Great performances all. But for me, Willem Dafoe and Grigoriy Dobrygin steal every scene they're in.

In my commitment to short posts, until someone out there has seen it to discuss, I'll simply say that this is a unique spy movie in that it does not rely on car chases through Paris (sorry Matt Damon) or shoot-em-ups. It relies on the brain, as does REAL spy work all over the world, performed by unsung heroes.

A Most Wanted Man is a bit slow in parts, and left a couple of gaps in some character development, but it was an excellent movie that I would watch again. Hope you see it.

Frozen

With the grandkids growing up, I don't get a chance to watch many Disney films.  I am a great fan of Disney animated features:  Just can't say enough wonderful things about Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and others.

Frozen has been getting huge buzz. Many say it's the best animated film of all time.  So, being both a movie reviewer and grandpa, I begged my near-adolescent granddaughters to humor me and join me for some Disney fun.  They said yes!

Frozen is a delight.  I will never be a spoiler, so I will say little about the plot.  One of the two sisters pictured above has magic powers that she can't quite control:  she turns everything around her to ice!  She has had this power since being a small child, and it has created some major problems for her.

A bit more: The girl with the special ice powers is a princess.  No one must know about her uncanny knack for changing the world into ice!  What if someone finds out?  Oh my!  When hardships arise, thank goodness for her loving sister.

That said, the rest of my comments are about the animation and music:  fantastic!  Watch as landscapes turn to ice.  Listen as a new round of great songs emerges.  My granddaughters sang along with every song as I watched, so it would seem that the songs are already hugely popular.

Disney has magic.  Always has.  Hopefully always will.  I just happen to love the whole Disney industry, from Disneyland to Disney World, from Mickey Mouse to Donald Duck, from Davy Crockett to Bambi.

Make-believe is great!  With a world so full of wars and turmoil, there is nothing quite like returning to the pristine world of Disney, where prince charmings save damsels, kindness wins out over cruelty, and  good triumphs over evil.  Take me to that world, please!

Bottom line:  Frozen is a master cartoon story.  A pure joy.  You don't have to watch with little ones.  Just sit back and escape to never-never land!
