Hell, What Do I Know?

I am preparing, in advance, to deeply shrug at this year's Oscars. I have seen all Best Picture nominees except War Horse (thanks for the warning, David). Here is my ranking: Exceptionally Loud..., The Tree of Life, Hugo, The Artist, The Help, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Descendants.

That is not, however, how it will pan out. Exceptionally Loud is hardly getting a nod. All the talk and bets are on The Artist, with The Descendants a close second. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?!

I shall practice self-constraint (as I've had to in the last few years) as I question, not MY assessment, but that of the Academy voters. Yes, I know, a bit of healthy arrogance in me. haha

So, blogsters, weigh in here: What gets your vote AND what gets your prediction, hmmm?

  1. Thanks, film buddy, for reminding us that 'tis the season, of Oscars, of course! I'm impressed at your ranking: Exceptionally Loud at the top with Tree of Life. Have not seen either so I cannot weigh in... We've had our say on HUGO, your number three spot! Ok, for me, a bit different: From those I've seen, I would put the Best Films in this order: The Artist, The Help, Moneyball, Midnight. Which will win? I'd say The Artist. Best Director will be Martin Scorsese for Help. Best Actor: George Clooney (yuk!) probably over the French dude (who looks like me???!!!) Best Actress: Meryl Streep (although I have not seen the Iron Lady). Wow, Sacha Baron Cohen has done a real PR number...can't wait to see his Dictator parody. Billy Crystal will be great again, after the recent duds who have MC'd the show. I await word from Georgia, Jenna, and other film buffs!

  2. "Martin Scorsese for The Help." I'm still laughing at that goof! (May I gently point out S. did Hugo?)

Yes, I'm just relieved we don't have to endure Franco and Hathaway.

    Enjoy!

  3. Hahaha....Was that a Freudian goof? I think so! I SO wanted Scorsese to get the nod...but not for Hugo! Thanks for the correction...we teachers need to get our essays red-inked too, and how well you and I leap to the task!

  4. I'm going to predict that "The Descendants" wins best picture and George Clooney, best Actor. That's just how the Academy works- although we know the movie and (non)acting truly sucked! I wish I had more time to see some of the other nominees. David which French actor looks like you? Valerie, I read an interview with James Franco- where he implied that he couldn't stand Anne Hathaway- and cringed being near her. Besides the fact that he seemed stoned out of his mind, this kind of explained his behavior. Have a fun night!!!

  5. Hell, I still don't know much. I enjoyed the show last night. Still love Billy, but was stunned at the overt gay Clooney references; maybe it's time for George to step out.

I was not surprised by The Artist winning Best Picture. The Academy clearly embraced its innovativeness. It was entertaining and very well done. That's it. I guess I just have wider requirements. I am sad at how very little attention E.L.&I.C. got. I still LOVE IT. Two factors, I suspect: it came out only very recently before the nominations. Voters are encouraged to see movies, but not required. Also, maybe too many couldn't gravitate to a 9.11 premise - maybe we'll never be able to.

    At least Descendants didn't win!

    Any other reactions out there?

  6. I really enjoyed this Oscars. I usually pan the show for being slow or silly. Not last night. It was actually quite creative! Note how they even did the Memoriam slot in black and white. Thumbs up for Billy. He's sort of looking Bob Hope-ish now. Very senior and dignified. Subtle humor. I really expected Martin Scorsese to get Best Director...for Hugo (!) The one Oscar with which I did not agree at all was Octavia as Best Supporting Actress. She had such a less challenging role than Berenice, who, in my mind, was even stronger than the dashing Frenchman. The Artist: yes, good choice for Best Picture. Best dressed? I'd choose the young Emma Stone. Most obnoxious: Angelina with her leg pose. Cutest male according to spouse: Jean Dujardin. Right about George...such a Rock Hudson setup. Meryl...so deserving. Gotta see Iron Lady. All in all, good show!

  7. I love Charlie Rose; today's show featured nominated actors who, as it turns out, did NOT win. A thoughtful bit of deserved spotlight.

A note on Angelina - isn't it time someone called her out on her eating disorder? Can't we all see it?! I think she looks ghastly, not at all appealing.

  8. Angelina is, to me, very unattractive. She just works too hard at being cool. I've never liked her acting, not even in Girl, Interrupted. Brad on the other hand is a really fine actor. Do you find him ugly, Valerie? (haha)

  9. Hello Oscar and film critics! Looks like you hit the nail on the head with "The Artist". That was a good choice, a smart choice. We could not believe how many Oscars went to "Hugo"- a movie noone I knew saw (oh except you:-)) So glad "The Descendants"didn't win- by far the best part of that movie was how the writer (or whatever he was?) posed and made fun of Angelina Jolie's stance after she presented! Ok I agree that she's anorexic BUT stunningly beautiful- and I thought it was hilarious how she laughed at her sexuality and everyone ogling her and her stupid leg. We all have moments where it's just funny, and she knew it, and I liked that. I thought Billy was a solid host, funny and a smart choice. Very funny, the George Clooney gay references- once again, I think he is hetero and basically exactly that guy he played in the mediocre movie minus the wife in the predictable coma. Jennifer Lopez, the nip slip. Discuss. Brad Pitt, not even hot with that long greasy hair- cut it and all would be right again.
