Romantic Comedy
Time to survey a new category. Favorite Romantic Comedy. Now, I mean the kind that stays with you for a longggg time. The kind whose lines of dialogue or soundtrack seep into your everyday life. The kind that you will stop whatever task you are doing and watch it every single time it comes on t.v. The kind that isn't just, "oh, that was sweet," but, "I laughed so hard, I felt so much." Tell us what your one or two choices are and WHY? (see, there's that English teacher essay wording again. help me!)

Return to Me--obvious reason, transplant & I love the line when they were in the restaurant and David Duchovny's cell phone rang and Holly Wortell said, "Somebody's ass is ringing!"
ReplyDeleteYou've Got Mail--I love Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan together; all the references to The Godfather are fun
When Harry Met Sally--just everything!!
Y'know, my first thought was When Harry Met Sally. It never loses its appeal for me. The dialogue is so real, Crystal is so Crystal, Connick's soundtrack adds much, as do the interjection of what looks like (but isn't) real characters married forever. By the way, I tried to dress like Meg Ryan for wayyyy too long after that movie.

Thanks, Janet!
OK, ladies, this genre is truly NOT my cup of tea! Lest I sound too macho, however, I must admit to liking several "cute" films in the mix. I'm with you both on Harry/Sally. Of course, her little act in the restaurant has become true film lore! Gotta say I was disappointed when they hit the hay together..gee, can't guys and gals really just be friends? I'd like to believe so..even when there's physical attraction. I enjoyed Miss Congeniality...yes, the film was not really focused on romance...but the two detectives did a nice job of heating up the screen a bit! Ben Bratt and Sandra Bullock are both magic, of course. Robin Williams did a nice comical piece in Miss Doubtfire. His disguise in the name of true love is quite charming. True confession: I really liked 13 Going on 30. OK, bring your wrath down upon me! The film is soppy, silly, and childish. Yet I laughed all the way through it and was touched by the couple's conundrums. Back to you, film scholar, for some much-needed enlightenment on a genre I must learn to appreciate. In other words, teach me, English teacher!
